Born in Chittagong, Sudhir Khastagir studied fine art under Nandalal Bose in Santiniketan. Later, he worked in stone with the sculptor Ganpat Kahinath Mahtre in Bombay. His style was robust and experimental, and constituted a decided departure from the smooth tonalities of the Bengal School. Besides his creative work, Khastagir taught at the Scindia School and Doon School and was appointed principal of the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Lucknow. He was a member of the Royal Society of Arts. His honours include the Padmashree. The canvases on these pages are among the last with his private estate.
